Demi Lovato Comes Out As Non-Binary And Changes Pronouns To They/Them
This comes after a lot of healing and self-reflective work.
Singer Demi Lovato is known for being an outspoken advocate of LGBTQ rights. Officially, the 28-Year-Old has come out as a non-binary, a term that regards people who don’t identify with any particular gender. “Today is a day I’m so happy to share more of my life with you all. I am proud to let you know that I identify as non-binary.” Lovato said in a tweet.

The pop star added they officially would be changing pronouns to they/them moving forward. Lovato, who had earlier this year identified as a pansexual in a podcast series: 4D With Demi Lovato, elaborated on their choice of gender identification. Delving into a conversation with Alok Vaid Menon, a gender non-conforming writer, and performer, Lovato claimed they have been doing some healing and self-reflective work over the past year and a half.

“With that said, I’ll be officially changing my pronouns to they/them. I feel that this best represents the fluidity I feel in my gender expressions and allows me to feel most authentic and true to the person I both know I am and still am discovering. I want to make it clear I’m still learning and coming into myself; I don’t claim to be an expert or a spokesperson.” Lovato stated.

The singer went on to say that their overdose was what led to this wake-up call about their gender identity. Lovato continued: “I feel like the reason why that happened was because I was ignoring my truth and I was suppressing who I am in order to please stylists or team members or this or that or even fans that wanted me to the sexy, feminine pop star in the leotard and look a certain way, I thought that was what I was supposed to be.”

Lovato reiterated that being non-binary doesn’t mean they would stop enjoying dressing in a feminine.
The singer reiterated that being non-binary doesn’t necessarily mean they would stop enjoying dressing in a feminine, insisting it doesn’t invalidate the gender identity. However, Lovato claimed it would mean the world to them if fans “could start identifying me as they/them” but added that it’s understandable if people accidentally slip up. Before this, Lovato had opened about battling addiction and dealing with mental health issues in a YouTube documentary.
