Will Smith Smacked Chris Rock Making ‘G.I. Jane’ Jokes On Jada Pinkett Smith
“Love makes you do crazy things.”
The 94th Academy Awards was painted with many of the unexpected. One of them was Will Smith’s act of “love”, which is now trending on social media, by slapping Chris Rock across his face after a poor taste joke was made by the comedian about his wife’s alopecia condition.
Will Smith won Best Actor with his acting in ‘King Richard’ as Richard Williams, father of the legendary sisters in the tennis world, Venus and Serena Williams.
Rock was making funny jabs on the stage when he eventually pointed at Jada Pinkett Smith who had recently maintained a short haircut after she’s suffering from a hair loss condition called alopecia. He joked, “Jada, I love you. G.I. Jane 2, can’t wait to see you.”
Pinkett rolled her eyes at the joke, obviously not amused by it as Will Smith walked up on stage to smack him across the face. The man reacted, dumbfounded by the hit, “Wow, Will Smith just smacked the s**t out of me.”
After assaulting the comedian on stage, Smith gave his acceptance speech, and tearfully explained his action, “Love makes you do crazy things.”
He then added, “I’m being called on in my life to love people and to protect people and to be a river to my people.”
“I want to apologize to the Academy, I want to apologize to all my fellow nominees. This is a beautiful moment,” he apologized to the viewers and attendees.
“Art imitates life. I look like the crazy father.”
The father-of-two yelled from the seat, “Keep my wife’s name out of your f***king mouth.”
“Richard Williams was a fierce defender of his family,” he mentioned in his speech. “In this time in my life, in this moment I am overwhelmed by what God is calling on me to do.”
Actor Denzel Washington and actor-producer Tyler Perry approached the man after the incident, appearing trying to calm the man down and talking to him. Smith later quoted Washington’s words in his speech, “At your highest moment, be careful because that’s when the devil comes for you.”
He yelled it twice during the exchange that was partially muted in some late broadcasts but was clearly heard in other live channels. Several viewers have questioned whether the moment was scripted, but the executive editor from Vanity Fair, Ramin Setoodeh, confirmed it was real as he watched the rehearsals just the day before.
He tweeted live and wrote, “It was not supposed to happen. It was real.”
Bradley Cooper appeared to have approached the actor as well.
Several fellow actors approached him to console and talked to him. It wasn’t yet known whether he’ll receive any form of repercussions for his brash act on stage.
Jada previously talked about how the “terrifying” moment of finding out that she’s losing her hair in an episode of Red Table Talk in 2018.
Queen Latifa was pictured hugging Jada, congratulating his win.
The couple appeared calmer after Smith got his trophy and got back to his seat.
Chris has been taking jabs at the couple for years now, with what could be marked as the start of it all being at the 2016 Oscars when he, just like last night, used Jada as his joke material.
In 2018, Smith wished a happy birthday to ex-wife Sheree Zampino, the mother of their son Trey. He wrote, “Happy Bday, @shereezampino. #BestBabyMamaEver! 🙂 I Love You, Ree-Ree.”
Chris wrote, “Wow. You have a very understanding wife.”
The ex-wife replied to his comment, “Don’t hate.”
