Selena Gomez, 27, during a Livestream ‘Bright Minded’ with Miley Cyrus revealed she’s been diagnosed with bipolar disorder
During an honest chat about mental health, Gomez revealed she was diagnosed after a visit to the McLean Hospital – Psychiatric Facility & Neuroscience Research Center situated in Massachusetts.
‘Just recently, I visited one of the best mental hospitals in America and I discovered that I was bipolar, having gone through a lot for years.’ Gomez explained.
On finding out the diagnosis, Gomez added that she felt equal parts horrified because the veil was lifted but felt relieved of having the knowledge of why she had suffered from several depressions and anxieties.
She continued: ‘I have never had full awareness or answers about the condition. When I have more details, it actually will assist me and it wouldn’t scare me once I know it. At a younger age, I was usually terrified of thunderstorms, so mom bought me books on Thunderstorms.’
‘She was like the more I educate myself on it, the more I will stop being afraid and it entirely worked. That’s something that has helped me a lot.’
Selena admitted that her upbringing in Texas isn’t encouraging enough to talk about emotions.
‘I’m from Texas and it’s just not known to speak of mental health. You got to appear very cool and then I see anger built up in teens and children because they are wanting that badly. So, I feel like when I said I was going to say I wanted to know, it took the fear away.’ Gomez added.
Nevertheless, the Good For You hitmaker had in August 2016 taken a break from her career to deal with depression, anxiety and panic attacks which she revealed stemmed from Lupus.
