‘I always loved my body, but I didn’t like my genitals. I would blow dandelion seeds into the hair and wish for God to turn me into a girl’
Naturally, the twins were born as boys but have regularly identified as females. However, Mayla and Sofia do hope that their successful transition will make the surgery more accessible in their country, especially as 175 Trans people were murdered in Brazil in 2020 – the most of any country according to the National Association of Transvestites and Transsexuals.

‘I always loved my body, but I didn’t like my genitals. I would blow dandelion seeds into the hair and wish for God to turn me into a girl.’ Mayla, who is studying medicine in Argentina, told Daily Mail. Born in Tapira, a town of 4000 people in the state of Minas Gerais, Mayla and Sofia has always done everything together, and their decision to undergo sex-change surgery is no exception.

Mayla added: ‘Before being sedated in hospital, I still couldn’t believe my dream was being fulfilled. When I woke up, I couldn’t believe it. It’s something that’s still sinking in. I no longer feel that discomfort when lying or sitting down. It’s wonderful. My first shower after being discharged was magical.’

Sofia revealed how both she and her sister Mayla were subjected to bullying due to their lifestyle. The teenager claim it was difficult at school as some classmates tend to throw notebooks at them. Nonetheless, the twins praised their family’s support for their choice, and interestingly their grandfather had paid for their surgeries ($20,000), having auctioned off a property he owned.
