James does have quite a range of DIY skills, ranging from tiling, carpet laying, painting, and even decorating. Laura was inspired after she heard of a man who was making a living by helping people put together their flatpack furniture. So, why not put up her (willing) husband to the job?

She shared, “He’s good at everything around the house and garden, so I thought why not put those skills to use and hire him out?”

She continued, “People are genuinely interested. There have been a few that got the wrong idea and thought I was hiring James out for something else entirely! Even with the cost of living crisis, I’m not planning to do that!”

And it became his main job as his service was so sought out to the point that he had to work six days a week for close to 12 hours a day. He’s since reduced his own workload to a regular 9-5 schedule and his service remains a popular demand.

“Most people think it’s great. They say it’s sometimes hard to get builders to quote for little jobs as they’re not interested. James is perfect for things like putting flat packs together, putting up trampolines, building shelves and installing things.”

The 38-year-old did not expect this to grow as popular as it did.

Laura shared, “I never expected it to take off as much as it has. We’ve only been going four months and it got to a point where there was so much work coming in that James was working six days a week. We’ve had to start turning jobs down and reduce our hours, so now we do Monday to Friday 9 am-5 pm.”

“We had our own building plans that we’ve not even started as we’ve just been so busy. We booked our first job for January too.”

She continued, “He’s really good at building things and doesn’t bother with the instructions. James doesn’t come from a trade background but his grandad was a nuclear engineer, and they think he was also on the spectrum. He’s got a very methodical mind and can think outside the box. He sees things differently.”
