Jennifer Lopez Breaks Down In Tears Over Not Being Oscar-Nominated For ‘Hustlers’
It was hard for her to be subbed, and it affected her self-esteem.
The Oscars snub appears to be the highlight in Jennifer Lopez’s new Netflix documentary Halftime. In the clip, the singer, nominated for a Golden Globe Award, first saw articles that predicted she would get Oscar-nominated for her role as a pole dancer in Hustlers.
She got to light up at the possibility of getting that level of recognition and even told a reporter she hoped she would make the list.
But then comes the sad news that she didn’t get nominated in 2020. “It was hard. I just had a very low self-esteem,” Lopez said in a voice-over as she’s seen in bed wearing a black robe.
The nominees for Best Supporting actress had gone to Laura Dern in Marriage story, Scarlett Johansson in JoJo Rabbit, Margot Robbie in Bombshell, Florence Pugh in Little Women, and Kathy Bates in Richard Jewell. Accordingly, the Best Actress nominees were Renee Zellweger for Judy, Scarlett Johansson for Marriage story, Charlize Theron for Bombshell, Cynthia Erivo for Harriet, and Saoirse Ronan for Little Women.
As she didn’t get included on the list, Lopez, as seen, broke down in tears and uttered she felt like she had to rethink her Hollywood career. In another scene, when working out in a gym, she added: “I had to really figure out who I was and believe in that and not believe in anything else.” Notably, the clip had opened with Lopez sweating in a crop top, leggings with little makeup on, and her hair pulled back as she rehearses with her backup dancers.
Into the clip, Lopez was also seen cussing before her Super Bowl halftime show, saying she wants to do more than shake her a**. And another bonus is that her fiancé Ben Affleck was seen commenting on the shaming the former Fly Girl has been hit with over the decades.
In 2021, Lopez told Elle: “[My production partner] Elaine [Goldsmith-Thomas] made a post where she listed all the things I had been nominated for and won that season. And when it came to the Oscars, it was so obviously absent. It was a sting. I was like, “Okay, when you’re supposedly in everybody else’s mind supposed to be nominated, and you’re not, what does that mean?”
“Is it really real? Are the other ones real, and this one isn’t? It came to a point where I was like ‘This is not why I do this. I don’t do this to have 10 Oscars sitting on my mantel or 20 Grammys.”
In her show Halftime, she reiterated she didn’t work so hard to get awards, but instead, she worked so her fans could feel something so that they could connect with her. An insight into her preparation for the Super bowl show appeared stressful as Lopez said she feels like she’s getting pressed but then added: “I am trying to give you something of substance, not just out there shaking our f**king a**es. I want something real. My whole life, I have been battling to be heard, to be seen, to be taken seriously.”
Affleck was also seen at a sit-down interview for Halftime, where he revealed he asked Lopez how she deals with all the bad press, the trolls, and the people who underestimate her.
He then shared that she responded, saying: “I expected this.”
However, Lopez is set to wed her former fiancé Affleck possibly this year. And while she had a new movie, The Mother with Gael Garcia Bernal, in the pipeline, the synopsis reads: “While fleeing from dangerous assailants, an assassin comes out of hiding to protect her daughter she left earlier in life.” Similarly, Lopez will be producing a limited edition series for Cinderella.
