What factors influence aging?
Brandon McCarthy recently asked Twitter Users if they agreed with the fact that people of the past aged faster. He, however, doesn’t know or perhaps realize he was opening a Pandora’s box. Users responded, sharing photos that support McCarthy’s theory and haven’t stopped to date.
From 24-year-old soccer players appearing like they’re going to break in half soon, including young moms and dads looking like great-grandparents, the evolutionary discovery of aging is undoubtedly the trend of January 2020.

However, it’s of a truth people age at different rates and presently the focus is on what can be done about it. Parminder Raina, a geriatric epidemiologist, a Canada Research Chair in Geroscience at McMaster University is currently leading a Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging (CLSA).

Being one of the largest and most in-depth studies on aging and health, it aims at understanding the factors influencing how we age and find solutions to cure, slow down and even prevent age-related disorders.
‘We presently have more centenarians than before. Not all of them are senile and functionally dependent. A lot of people live very full lives. Raina explained.

According to Raina, understanding how we age, what causes aging and importantly how we each age differently is very crucial to developing programs and interventions that will enhance independent and healthy living.

Equipped with a team of over 160 researchers and contributors, the CLSA is following over 50,000 randomly selected men and women within the ages of 14 and 85 over a 20-Year course in a bid to understand why some individuals live longer than others.

Nevertheless, the biggest funders of the ongoing projects include the Canada Foundation for Innovation, the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, the Ontario Ministry of Research and Innovation and other contributing provinces.
