‘I Met A Girl Online And We Fell In Love But Turns Out I Was Catfished By My Ex’

Online dating has become a norm for so many people, and it’s undoubtedly just an avenue to gamble with one’s feelings and emotions because without an actual meet-up, there can be nothing really ‘official’ in the true sense. Recently in the UK, 29-Year-Old Ray got into a messy situation with a ‘supposed lover’ who displayed a false personality.

He had gotten into a sham relationship with 25-Year-Old Helen [pictured], a lady hairdresser he met about a year ago after splitting up with his ex-GF, Aoife. 

Ray probably thought he had opened a new chapter in his life, but that was sadly not the case. His supposed online lover had allegedly slid into his DM on Instagram, where they first got talking. The love affair between the duo seemed to flourish as they got virtually close to each other without actually meeting up, although the pair claimed to live close to each other. 

After so much time invested in his affair with Helen, Ray got worried about the fact they hadn’t seen since the onset of their relationship. 

And so he decided to approach the MTV show Catfish UK, seeking the help of Oobah Butler and Nella Rose.

In his interview with the team, Ray narrated the story of his hook up with this ‘ghost personality’ and claimed they started chatting and got along because he felt they had so much in common. “I’m 29 and thinking about settling down. Things with Helen have gotten serious over the last year, and we’ve started making plans for the future.” Ray was convinced there was something unique about the hairdresser as he added: “She’s been able to access a part of me that I don’t share with a lot of people.” 

Ray admitted how good Helen made him feel and revealed that they spoke daily.

To get to the bottom of the matter, Catfish UK tried figuring out who Helen was. They contacted a friend of Helen on Instagram and left a series of voice notes, but it was a dead end as she left no reply. However, they were not done yet; they used a reverse image search to trace where the photos Helen had on her Instagram account to the actual source, and guess what!! The supposed identity belonged to a dashing young lady living in Scotland. 

It’s no real surprise that Ray fell for it because the lady in the picture is stunning. And as expected, he was upset after discovering Helen was a catfish, complaining: “It makes me feel stupid,” “it’s just embarrassing.”

The team made an advancement to unraveling the true identity of this sham lover. They effectively strategized to meet up with this Helen. Ray was utterly shocked and exclaimed: “Oh my days,” when he realized who he had been giving so much attention to over the last year. It was a very rude shock, and guess who Helen was – his ex-lover, Aoife. 

In her response to the bemused state of the team and her former lover, she smiled and said to Ray, “How does it feel, Ray? You hurt me, and I hurt you.”

Aoife then narrated her side of the story as she stated, “My name is not Helen, it is Aoife; we dated for a year, like a year ago.” She was interrogated on why she had to catfish her ex-lover, claiming it was for “revenge” because he allegedly cheated on her. She added: “I found him talking to multiple girls since the beginning. I felt terrible; it was the end of my world. I was in love with him; he was my first proper love” “You wasted my time, a year for a year. I want him to hurt the same way I hurt; I wanted to embarrass him.”

In his defense, Ray stated: “We dated for eight months, and it wasn’t something that I took seriously, and I was obviously talking to other people. She got the wrong idea of what was going on. I never made it official, though. I never remember telling you that I wanted you to be my girlfriend.”

But in opposition to what Ray said, Aoife revealed how he assured her that he wanted to get married to her and wanted to have kids together. “We did Valentine’s Day together, got me flowers, balloons with my names on them, a ring with a heart on it.” However, both Sabah and Rose were left shocked and claimed Ray and Aoife were as messed up as each other, adding that they did this to themselves at the end of the day.
