Engagement Piercings Are Trending As People Are Ditching Traditional Rings

Trigger warning: piercings and… blood.

A gorgeous diamond sitting on top of a silver sterling band adorned with tiny bits of white sapphires around it. It sounds like a beautiful ring to be proposed with, isn’t it? But lately, it seems that social media is seeing the rise of a different trend for couples to signify their union.

That trend is finger piercing that replaces the band with your finger as the gem is embedded in it.

Nobody knows how this trend started, but it’s part of body piercing that has been around for a while.

People have been embedding their bodies, including fingers, with gems and other objects for a while now. It’s just that the idea of using this concept to replace engagement or wedding rings has only become popular lately.

Dermal piercings do sound painful, and they are painful. But for many people, the unique concept is totally worth it.

A professional body piercer shares with People, “Micro dermal anchors are safe, and the body will hold them for years, as long as they’re in ideal places and if implant-grade titanium is used.” On top of that, customers can change the embedded stones when they want to because it’s only “surface work.”

And he’s actually been doing this for over ten years now. They only started becoming popular after “social media exposure.”

He also tells people that while it is painful, it’s not as bad as people think. It literally takes him seconds to install or remove a finger piercing safely. As long as you work with a professional, that is.

Medical director Dr. Lisa Kellett reminds people, “There are digital nerves and arteries that supply the finger, and if you were to pierce through them, it would be a big problem.”

In a worst-case scenario, you can lose bloody supply to the finger or experience numbness from having a nerve hit. She added, “If you catch your finger on something, it could cause tearing or scarring, and scarring, in particular, can cause significant problems in range of motion and function of the finger. Unlike other parts of the body, the finger doesn’t have a lot of tissue, and it’s hard to graft over that area.”

You can also accidentally caught them on things while moving around, which can cause scarring.

She leaves a piece of advice to people who are seeking to get one themselves after seeing a picture on Instagram or Pinterest, “It’s trendy, and I guess somewhat unique, but in the long run, you’re better off getting an actual ring.”
