Furious Tesla Owners Share Videos Of Their Cars Frozen Shut During Snowstorm
“Bet ya didn’t think of ice in the Tesla design.”
Snowstorm has been hitting the US and Canada hard as the temperature quickly reaches subzero levels for hours. Thick layers of snow are covering cars and several Tesla owners have found themselves unable to unlock their cars to drive to work.
Rachel Modestino who lives in Ontario couldn’t open her Tesla when it was five degrees Fahrenheit with snow covering her car.
She shared the video and captioned it, “Bet ya didn’t think of ice in the Tesla design.”
The meteorologist shared that she’s tried defrosting her car, but learned that it was not long enough to prevent the door latch from being frozen shut like that.
She tried pushing the button and brushed the snow off to no avail. And to the internet, she went for solutions.

Fellow Tesla users shared that the new app update allows users to unlatch the door for her. Others told her to defrost the car earlier to prevent the latch from being frozen and to melt the snow around the window before leaving. Another suggested getting a car cover.
One observer commented, “You shouldn’t need to use Twitter to learn how to use your expensive car.”
Another told her, “You shouldn’t need a car cover to get into your expensive car. Every other car company has had this figured out for decades but people just keep making excuses for Tesla because they’re in the cult of Elon.”
Rachel later reiterated that she still loves her car and just came to Twitter because she couldn’t understand how to work it out.
Others were criticizing how she didn’t have a garage to park her $50,000 car in. But there isn’t much Rachel can do about what she doesn’t have that she cannot just magically summon to existence so she just replied when people told her to keep it in a garage, “Okay, but I don’t.”
She shared later how she’s finally figured out how to unlatch the door handle.
I’ve done it! Just needed an app update and to walk through Twitter fire but more Ws from here on out. (tho I’m still thinking about heated door handles & charging port) pic.twitter.com/YV3BFDV62V

Another shared his observation, “Handles (are) not the only problem right? Window not sliding down when frosted means I couldn’t close the door… I think you’re right Rachel, it’s a design error. They’re fixing it with workarounds, but it starts with the error. I too love the car, but agree with your remark.”
But that’s not the only problem – another Tesla owner shared that they can’t charge the car due to the cold.
Domenick Nati from Virginia had to cancel his Christmas plans with his son as the storm caused his car to fail to charge. Speaking to Business Insider, the 44-year-old shared that he tried plugging into a station in Lynchburg and it was 20 degrees Fahrenheit outside. And instead of getting charged, the battery continued to go down until it died.
He had to abandon the car on Christmas Eve as it still couldn’t charge the next day to go home. He hadn’t gotten any help from Tesla regarding his problem as well.
