‘World’s Dirtiest Man’ Dies At 94 Just Months After His First Bath
Surprisingly, Amou didn’t suffer from any bacteria or parasites apart from Trichinosis.
Amou Haji, known as the ‘World’s Dirtiest Man,’ went 67 years without having his bathe as he believed it would make him ill. And with such a perspective, he lived in a shack on the outskirts of the village of Dejgah and was shockingly well-educated – often discussing the pros and cons of the French/ Russian Revolutions with visitors.
Apart from his hatred of soap and water, the Iranian enjoyed smoking animal dung from an old pipe and four cigarettes at once.
Accordingly, Amou ate uncooked porcupine roadkill and drank unclean water from puddles out of a rusty oil can. His lifestyle attracted scientists who then got interested in studying what type of life forms might have taken up home in his body, but they were stunned to find he hadn’t suffered any bacteria.
Tests for HIV, Hepatitis, or any parasites apart from Trichinosis all came up negative for Amou.
FYI, Trichinosis is a bacteria that comes from ingesting raw meat and causes a common infection. Interestingly, Amou was also knowledgeable about up-to-date politicians but complained that the international publicity made life difficult for him. A short documentary titled The Strange Life Of Amou Haji was launched in 2013.
Sadly, he has now died at 94.
His death comes just months after neighbors urged him to have a shower after telling him that not washing made it challenging to make friends or find a girlfriend. The Iranian news agency had quoted a source, saying: “for the first a few months ago, villagers had taken him to a bathroom to wash.” Before this, Amou had once jumped from moving car men who bundled him into to take him to a river.
While his neighbors respected him, Amou had alleged people occasionally turned up to taunt him, and a few even threw stones at him.
With Amou’s passing, the title “World’s Dirtiest Man” could go to an Indian man. Kailash Kalau Singh of Varanasi hasn’t washed up for over 30 years. The Hindustan Times reported that he rejected water in favor of what he called a fire bath to help end all the problems confronting the nation. Singh used to own a grocery store, but his unclean habits drove customers away, and he is now a farmer.
