Walmart, Target Opens For Labor Day Sales While Costco is Closed

It’s observed on the first Monday in September to celebrate the achievements of American workers.

The federal holiday, Labor Day, started in 1894 after President Glover Cleveland signed it into law. It’s observed on the first Monday in September to celebrate American workers’ social & economic achievements, per the U.S. Department of Labor. It’s expected that Americans mark the day with barbecues, shopping, and clearance markdowns.

Most national retailers – Target, Walmart, Home Depot, and more opened Monday with Labor Day sales.

Most pharmacies are shut down, some grocery stores are scheduled to have special holiday hours, while a few retailers operate with Sunday hours. Of the stores opened, shoppers will have access to a large amount of clearance and markdowns as retailers try to unload excess inventory. Meanwhile, U.S. stock markets and banks are closed. 

Accordingly, Costco is closed, and the U.S. Postal Service will not deliver mail.

The Costco wholesale clubs are equally shut down, just like they are for New Year’s Day, Easter, Memorial Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. “While many people do have Monday off for a three-day weekend, nearly 40% of hourly and skilled workers aren’t expected to have the day off,” Fred Goff, co-founder, and CEO of Jobcase, reportedly told Axios. 

Restaurants also open Labor Day and National Cheese Pizza Day.

McDonald’s, Popeyes, Taco Bell, Papa John’s, Pizza Hut, Domino’s, Burger King, and more are open Monday. The Subway Footlong Pass started Sept 1. for 100,000 Subway MyWay Rewards members who bought a $15 subscription for 50% off a sandwich a day. Fall has already arrived at Starbucks and Dunkin with the return of pumpkin spice coffee and pastries. 

As per Numerator’s Labor Day Weekend Survey, more than of consumers [51%] expect inflation to impact their Labor Day plans, down from 62% on Memorial Day Weekend.
