‘The Little Mermaid’ Trailer Hits Over 1.5 Million Dislikes In Two Days
YouTube has now disabled the dislike counter after it reached over 1million.
Disney released the 2023 Little Mermaid film trailer during its Biennial Expo convention. Since then, it has been getting mixed reactions and criticisms. While many applaud the movie’s new turn, some critics have made it clear they dislike the new character, Halle Bailey, while also hitting at the movie director, Rob Marshall.
Racist trolls took it upon themselves to attack Halle, 22, for being cast as Ariel in ‘The Little Mermaid.’
And as a result, the trailer garnered over 1.5million dislikes on YouTube in just two days following its release. The dismissive response was so bad that the dislike counter had to be disabled, yet social media gurus got their way around it, installing an extension that allows them to know the number of persons who don’t like the particular video.
Accordingly, Disney is slammed that its Princess in the re-make doesn’t appear to be underwater.
The hashtag #NotmyAriel as per DailyMail, has been trending on Twitter, with some also insisting that Disney has wasted their money, remarking the ‘race swapping is not okay.” In response to the backlash, the Grown-ish actress has reportedly alleged that rather than focusing on the hate, she’d concentrate more on the importance of her role acting as a Disney character.
“The fact that now it’s getting to be played by me, a person who looks like me, a woman of color, I’m just like, wow, I’m so grateful for what it will do for all the other little black and brown boys and girls who will see themselves in me,” Halle told People.
She added: “Because I know if I had seen myself when I was younger, I think my whole perspective would’ve changed. Well, I can only be myself when it comes to taking on something this grand and great. Sometimes it can be overwhelming to take the character that everybody has loved and known for years and make it your own.”
“But I just listened to the little girl that’s in me, and I listen to her and make her happy, and then I know if I put my all and my passion and everything into it that I’ll give it my best. And I feel like I did”.
In a separate interview with Variety, Halle acknowledged the support of her grandparents. She remarked: “It was an inspiring and beautiful thing to hear their words of encouragement, telling me, ”You don’t understand what this is doing for us, for our community, for all the little Black and brown girls who are going to see themselves in you.”
However, the trailer showed a scene referring back to the 1989 cartoon featuring an old shipwreck beneath the ocean, where Ariel went exploring.
Gentle music plays as the mermaid swam through the ocean with the sea’s waves crashing in. Ariel then graced the screen with her long hair locks flowing as rays of light reflected her radiant mermaid tail, and as she rapidly headed towards the shoreline, she could be heard singing the lyric ‘part of your world’ song.
The cast of the upcoming film also features stars Jonah Hauer-King as Principe Eric, Melissa McCarthy as Ursula, and of course, Haile Bailey as Ariel. The storyline will remain as the original version following the deal between Ariel and the sea witch, Ursula, to have her voice exchanged for a pair of legs. Of the positive reactions, a clip had captured a young child asking in excitement, “That is her? That is Ariel?”
Another clip on TikTok showed a young girl unable to contain her excitement as she stared at the screen with an elaborate smile.
