Prison Break Reboot Confirmed With Final Decision Made On Returning Cast

The original Prison Break aired from 2005 to 2017 with about 90 episodes.

The hit crime drama series Prison Break is set to get a fully-fledged spin-off series, and a decision has been made over the cast. The new version of the show is currently in the early development stage and would be set in the universe of the old program made famous by Dominic Purcell and Wentworth Miller. As of now, it doesn’t have a prospective release date yet, but fans are very thrilled with the update.

Plot details for the Prison Break reboot remain up in the air, but it is written by Elgin James, who also serves as the executive producer.

In 2023, EW first reported that the reboot was officially in the works, and alongside Elgin are producer Dawn Olmstead, original creator Paul T. Scheuring, Marty Adelstein, and Neal Moritz. Now, Variety has reported sad news about the new Prison Break cast, and fans are not happy about it, claiming it would focus on a new crew of inmates.

The new drama will not focus on Wentworth Miller and Dominic Purcell’s characters, Michael Scofield and Lincoln Burrows.

Back in 2020, the lead actor Miller had himself made it clear he wouldn’t be returning to the series. At the time, he took to Instagram and wrote, “I’m not concerned for myself. I can’t be ‘bullied’ in this space. I have too much power. ‘Delete. Block. Deactivate.’ Etc.” He added, “But I take seriously the possibility of queer kids visiting here, recently out of the closet or exploring the idea… I don’t want them exposed to bulls**t.

“On a related note… I’m out. Of PB. Officially,” Miller concluded his post.

So far, the news of the Prison Break reboot and its cast has left the internet divided. Someone tweeted: “Whyyyy do we need to reboot everything? I stg reboots are always 100x more s**t.” Another pointed out, “How about an original thought for a new show? Lmao, let this show be remembered as one of the greatest ever.” A third added, “I couldn’t bring myself to watch the last season.”

The comments continued as another suggested, “They should just make a new show. Prison Break was great, so probably not a good idea to invite the comparison at this point.” While another also penned, “Season 1 was good, the rest was a waste of time and money. Hopefully, a reboot will do better.” However, Prison Break ran for five seasons, airing from 2005 to 2019 with about 90 episodes.

The limited series ended with Michael refusing to join the CIA so he could live a normal life with his wife Sara and their son Mike.

The story had followed a structural engineer, Michael Scofield, who devises an elaborate plan to break his falsely accused brother, Lincoln, out of death row. Season 5 was a sequel set seven years after the main show and saw Michael return from the dead as he fought to get his identity and take down Poseidon. Sarah Wayne Callies starred as Dr. Sara Tancredi, Michael’s spouse, while Robert Knepper plays complex inmate Theodore T-Bag Bagwell.
