No Woman Should Be Giving Up Her Name After Marriage In This Era
“Why isn’t he changing his name to Ben Lopez?”
Bennifer fans couldn’t have been happier to hear that the two finally tied the knot almost 20 years after their first engagement. Jennifer Lopez sent own news from her personal newsletter, telling how they got married at the Little White Wedding Chapter in Las Vegas.
Along with that, she’s also requested a name change to Jennifer Lynn Affleck, a choice that shocked many followers.
Obviously, women are allowed to make any choice they want, including if they want to change their name or not. Unfortunately, people really didn’t think Lopez should’ve changed to Affleck because of how iconic JLo’s name has been for decades now.
She signed the romantic ‘On the JLo’ newsletter with “With love, Mrs. Jennifer Lynn Affleck.” Twitter went wild.
Some women argued that women need to keep their identities and refuse to change their names.
Others think she’s throwing away the brand name that she’s built for so long.
The practice of taking your spouse’s name actually originated in the 11th century when the constitution defined a woman’s identity through their husband’s. Women did not have their own rights, but through their husbands, they could.
Of course, things have changed, and women can choose to take their husband’s name or not. Some kept to it because they considered it a romantic thing to do traditionally. Others may be considering the legal consequences tied to changing one’s name.
