Netflix Is Lowering Their Bar For ‘Views’ And It’s Boosting The Number By 35%

This number is said to be closer to what YouTube uses.

Netflix recently released a staggering number of 76 million views on one of their newest series, ‘The Witcher’, that stars Henry Cavill. But comes with the fine print that they have changed their definition of views.

Netflix Inc. has updated that simply watching a single scene in the first episode can already add a view to the show. Netflix used to count views when people watch at least 70% of the first episode. This has actually gone as far down as two minutes, boosting view numbers by 35%.

Netflix executives said, “The new metric is about 35% higher on average than the prior metric. For example, 45m member households chose to watch ‘Our Planet’ under the new metric vs. 33m under the prior metric.”

The footnote of how views are defined was written as people who “Chose to watch and did watch for at least 2 minutes — long enough to indicate the choice was intentional.” But Netflix is new to this whole open-statistic on their viewership.

Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos added, “Over the next several months, we’re going to be rolling out more specific granular reporting — first to our producers, and then to our members and of course to the press over time — and be more fully transparent about what people are watching on Netflix around the world.”
