“I should have never let you go to that school.”

It’s not easy to plan for your wedding that satisfies everyone. Especially when your parents aren’t exactly the kind that supports your lifelong endeavors towards your passion. And that was exactly what a bride had to face with her own biological mother.

Her story goes viral with many people sympathizing with her unsupportive mother’s take on the couple’s decision in planning their wedding. As the couple mainly communicates in ASL between them and with their friends, they decided to have it held with ASL as the main language and an English-speaking interpreter next to them.

But the mother did not like that idea at all. She didn’t think her deaf daughter should’ve had sign language used as the main on her own wedding.

So she shared her story on Reddit to get third-party opinions on whether it was too much of her to forge on with using ASL for their wedding.

“AITA for having my wedding ceremony in sign language?”

The author of the post, a 24-year-old deaf bride-to-be, shared what it’s like growing up in her household, “My parents didn’t only not learn ASL but they explicitly prevented me from it growing up. We lived in Austin, Texas, my whole childhood and there was a school for the deaf 10 minutes from our house but they specifically said they would never let me go there.”

But as she grew up, she found a community, and eventually, her other half who she feels comfortable with.

“I can’t cut off my parents as I’m currently helping pay for my little brother to go to a school for autistic kids,” she explained. She’s also taken off her implants at one point, which was why she continues using ASL more.

“I needed surgery to adjust the implant but I decided to just not get the surgery and stop wearing them, there was no real point in it and I didn’t feel like getting unnecessary surgery,” she added. “We can’t sign and speak at the same time. The pastor and my fiancé can’t speak, I can but choose not to unless I absolutely have to.”

Someone trying to meddle into how you want your wedding done in the language you’re more comfortable with? The judgment was clear.
