Mom Makes Daughter, 18, Who Decided To Stay At Home Sign A Lease And Pay Rent
The daughter also decided to speak up her mind.
A mom from Oklahoma has been getting major backlash on TikTok after she shared a TikTok clip of how she’s making her daughter pay her $100 every month for rent. She shared that her daughter, Jada, decided to “stay at home” after turning 18 and she was not about to be allowed to freeload there.
But the unnamed mom and daughter moment was not received well by many, who called her love “conditional.”
At over millions of views, thousands debated about how effective this is. The majority believed that her mother’s teaching did not show that she cared for her.
Jada decided to address the hate comments she received under the video and explained her stance.
She spoke, “I was a single mom at 16 and my parents didn’t set me up for success, I had to fight for every single thing I have.”
Her principle was to never raise children that do not “depend” on her for things. She wants them prepared for the “real world” and hence the lease agreement. The mom also made it realistic by giving her “renter history” which every renter in Oklahoma needs.

It took her a while, but she later explained that the $100 actually goes to the items that was already on Jada’s wishlist for her new place.
The mom added that Jada doesn’t pay for anything else, including her phone plan. The $100 she’s paying every month would go to her “utilities, room, food and everything else.”
And she does this with all of her children, explaining that she’s “setting up” her children “for success.” She also gave Jada the right to move out but noted that “in this economy, it would be a lot harder if she did.”
She also reassured followers that Jada was “in agreement with everything except her curfew, and we negotiated that, and she got what she wanted.” And finally, she let her daughter speak on the issue.
“It was hard to comprehend,” she spoke in the video on her initial reaction to the mom’s demand.
However, she soon realized that “sooner or later,” she’ll have to pay for her own rent. She saw this as her opportunity to be responsible and learn to be independent, and be “ready” for the future. She asks that people to not judge her mom based on the half-minute clip she shared.
But followers who’ve been through the exact same situation shared how they never see eye to eye with their parents after the fact.
Is this a good parenting tip to set up your children? Or perhaps there are better ways to teach them responsibilities? What do you think?
