Joker Sequel Is ‘In The Works’ As Todd Phillips Earns Around $100M From This Movie
We’ll be waiting for his more awesome acts.
Toby Emmerich, chairman of Warner Bros. Pictures Group, was visited by Todd Phillips on Oct. 7. On the first weekend, the team was elated with $96.2m, which pushed Phillips to propose more origin stories on DC characters.
Emmerich balked, protective of the canon stories of DC character (not that it matters as multiple origin stories on Batman and Spider-Man have been made and only bored 80% of the viewers). Despite the dark, violent tone of the movie, Todd Phillips’ daring take on Joaquin Phoenix’s act as Joker.
‘Joker’ crossed $1 billion marks, giving Phillips the green light for at least another movie with DC.
‘Joker’ is the fourth title from DC that grossed $1 billion after ‘Aquaman’, ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ and ‘The Dark Knight’. It has also beaten ‘Deadpool’, another R-rated movie that grossed 1 billion, but at much less budget.
Todd Phillips has also earned $100 million as he deferred upfront salary and chooses to earn a percentage of the profit.
So, what’s the sequel going to be about?
Phillips has already teased on Bruce Wayne’s origins with a letter that seems to imply Arthur and Bruce may have been half-brothers. But it could be wrong with Penny being imaginative of things. But he won’t delve in it – it’s Matt Reeves job to do so and Robert Pattinson will be Batman.
Todd Phillips’s suitable next choice would be Darkseid or Lex Luthor, popular supervillains that have a lot more to explore.
