Johnny Depp Recounts The Day He Remembered Amber Heard Lost It When He Took Off His Own Boots
The actor got personal as he delved deep into his private life.
Johnny Depp, then busy with many filming schedules for ‘Pirates of the Caribbean,’ was only married for 18 months to Amber Heard. The 58-year-old actor recalled how he and Heard maintained a sort of routine that was new for him.
He spoke in the court, summarizing their marriage life and the point at which he felt like it was changing. Depp told the judge, “I worked quite a lot, and when I came home from work, I’d come in the house, and she’d sit me down and give me a glass of wine and take my boots off and set them to the side.”
“I’ve never experienced anything like that in my life. I never experienced that, and it became a regular thing, kind of routine.”
“One night I came home, and she was on the phone; I took my boots off, suddenly Miss Heard approached with this look on her face, she just said what did you just do? What did you do?” Depp reiterated the question he received, to which he tried to clarify with the 35-year-old actress.
She told him that he’d just taken his boot off, and Depp still couldn’t quite understand the situation and said, “Yes, I did, he said he told her. You were busy.”
“No, no, no, that’s my job. You don’t do that; I do that,” his ex-wife stated. “Let me get you a glass of wine.”
The ‘Edward Scissorhands’ star continued, “I did take a pause, of course, the fact she was visibly shaken or upset that I had broken her rules of routine. Once you notice something like that, you start to notice other tidbits that come out.”
“Then, within a year, a year and a half, she had become another person, almost.”
Depp’s lawsuit against Heard was for a Washington Post op-ed written by Heard herself that implied he had been abusing her physically. The actor, who lost a libel case against The Sun that called him a ‘wife beater,’ sues $50 million against the mom-of-one.
On the other side, Heard is countersuing for $100 million because Depp called him a liar. But the beginning of their relationship was the complete opposite of the situation right now. Depp recalled the time they worked together on the set for ‘The Rum Diary’ to be “too good to be true.”
“She was attentive; she was loving, she was smart, she was funny, she was understanding. We had many things in common, certainly blues music, literature. For that year, or year and a half, it was amazing.”
“From the beginning of our relationship for a good year and a half, she was wonderful, and then things just started to change, or things started to reveal themselves, is a better way to put it.”
He recalled feeling “something he shouldn’t be feeling” for her after their kissing scene in the movie before she went to his trailer to kiss again. The actor, who’s known for his issues with drug abuse, claimed that Heard had exaggerated the situation.
“The characterization of my ‘substance abuse’ that’s been delivered by Miss Heard is grossly embellished, and I’m sorry to say, but a lot of it is just plainly false,” the man spoke under oath.
“It was an easy target for her to hit because once you’ve trusted somebody for a certain amount of years and you’ve told them all the secrets of your life, that information can be used against you, especially if it’s taken to a point that’s teetering on impossible, teetered over impossible, in fact, at times.”
“I am not some maniac who needs to be high or loaded all the time,” Depp continued. “In fact, before – and in – Australia, I’d been off of alcohol for about 18 months.”
Despite that, he admitted that he’d “done all the drugs I was aware of” by the age of 15 and started as young as 11 with his mother’s nerve tablets, a coping mechanism he used to deal with the abuse he received from his mother. He said, “Can’t say I’m proud of admitting that.”
