Jennifer Lopez Finds Her Jade Green Versace Dress Jokes ‘Hard’ To Take
“It was hard when you think people think you’re a joke like you’re a punch line.”
Jennifer Lopez’s new Netflix documentary “Halftime” had her mention how her personal life has been overshadowing her career. And one of those moments was how the iconic green Versace dress was one of her most talked-about moments.
Lopez spoke of how she was the “punchline” and even turned into the reason Google Images had a search function.
She shared, “When I started working, the beauty ideal was very thin: blond, tall, and not a lot of curves. I grew up around women with curves. So it was nothing ever I was ashamed of.”
The green Versace dress became a worldwide sensation, and some might remember that episode from “South Park,” interviews, and viral clips of talks regarding her figure. She spoke, “It was hard when you think people think you’re a joke like you’re a punch line.”
“No matter what I achieved, their appetite to cover my personal life overshadowed everything that was happening in my career.”
Lopez recalled how she was close to giving up the show business due to the negativity from the media. She continued, “I just had very low self-esteem. I really believed a lot of what they said, which is, I wasn’t any good, that I wasn’t a good singer, I wasn’t a good actress, I wasn’t a good dancer. I wasn’t good at anything. I just didn’t belong here. Why wouldn’t I just go away?”
“I felt like I was in this really abusive, dysfunctional relationship.”
Lopez’s former fiance Ben Affleck – with whom she’s reconciled recently – was also featured in the documentary. He said, “I said to her once, ‘Doesn’t this bother you?’ and she said, ‘I’m Latina. I’m a woman. I expected this. You just don’t expect it. You expect to be treated fairly.'”
The documentary followed how the dress’s impression remained strong as it was revived a few times.
Vogue editor Anna Wintour praised the Versace dress’s new rendition Lopez wore at the brand’s spring 2020 fashion show in Milan.
