“I’m Going As Fast As I Humanly Can”: Starbucks Employee Breaks Down
“If it’s not your problem that my oven is breaking, it’s not my problem that you are waiting longer.”
Working in the foodservice industry can be highly stressful for many reasons. The business always demands workers to be fast while providing high-quality service. But with the concerns of workplaces getting short-staffed, many restaurants, cafes, etc., are struggling to keep up with demands in time.
A Starbucks employee took to social media to express her frustration after being treated horribly by a customer.
Rachel Keaton, who does acting and writes for films when she’s not working as a barista, shares her story about how it was such a busy day combined with a broken oven that led to longer order processing time. But the worst part was how customers refused to be understanding about the situation.
“To the lady who said it wasn’t her problem,” she began her story.
Dozens of people swarmed the Starbucks joint, and she had to take in the orders all at once while one of the ovens was broken. However, people were unwilling to understand and have the patience or maybe adjust their menus if they couldn’t wait for the food.
“This pandemic happened; people decided that it was too much to handle, and they left their jobs. Jobs like this. And that’s fine like I understand it’s too hard.”
“I think we’re in this predicament because you think it’s not your problem.”
She continued, “You expect all of the food industry workers to adjust with working during a pandemic, you expect us to be working—short staffed—for your orders to come out.”
She emphasized, “I think the issue is that you think it’s not your problem.”
“But it is your problem. Because, if it’s not your problem that my oven is broken, it’s not my problem that you are waiting longer. I’m going as fast as I humanly can.”
“I had a co-worker who broke her arm, and I remember thinking like, ‘Wow, she’s really lucky, she gets to miss.’ Like how bad is that?”
“Part of me is like, I really hope I get fired so I can file for unemployment and I can actually have time to look for a new job,” she sobs. And she continued that while she was crying during her work, she felt like she didn’t want to do it anymore.
“For every one person that’s understanding and has patience and is, like, kind, there’s like five other people who are not, and are really mean.”
“No, it’s not your problem. But, I mean, it should be. Or it shouldn’t even be a problem, to begin with.”
