“I Am Heartbroken”: Will Smith Resigned From Film Academy Over Chris Rock Smack
“The list of those I have hurt is long and includes Chris…”
The ‘King Richard’ star has announced his resignation from the decisions that will be made by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ Board of Governors for his slap against Chris Rock.
Will Smith has become the headline worldwide after he smacked the comedian over a joke aimed at his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith.
In his statement, the actor will “fully accept any and all consequences for my conduct”, including the possibility of being expulsed from the organization.
“The list of those I have hurt is long and includes Chris, his family, many of my dear friends and loved ones, all those in attendance, and global audiences at home,” his statement continued.
In the wake of his slap, celebrities have voiced their protest and opinions. Jim Carrey came in with a strong statement, calling him “selfish” and the situation “sickening” to watch.
Smith added, “I betrayed the trust of the Academy. I deprived other nominees and winners of their opportunity to celebrate and be celebrated for their extraordinary work. I am heartbroken.”
Smith’s unscripted action had been a sore spot for particularly Joseph Patel, a South Asian who co-produced ‘Summer of Soul’ and won the Best Documentary Feature at the 94th Academy Award.
In a now-deleted Twitter thread, he raged over how Rock, in the midst of his confusion, had quipped, “The winner is ‘Summer of Soul’… Ahmir ‘Questlove’ Thompson and… four white guys.”
“I want to put the focus back on those who deserve attention for their achievements and allow the Academy to get back to the incredible work it does to support creativity and artistry in film,” the statement continued.
