Family Who Receives $10.4 Million Instead Of A $100 Refund Bought A Mansion And Now Has To Pay It All Back

The family has gone radio silence and avoided the court.

A popular cryptocurrency trader site had accidentally transferred $10.4 million to the wrong user after they mistakenly input her account number in the field that was meant for the amount. Thevamanogari Manivel from Melbourne immediately spent some of the $10,474,143 on her dream mansion and withdrew the money to be split among her family members.

The company only found out about the mistake during an audit last Christmas, seven months after the transfer.

Crypto.com immediately reached the family, but Manivel revealed that she’d spent $1.35 million on a luxurious mansion in a Melbourne suburb of Craigieburn that has four bathrooms, five bedrooms, a home gym, and a cinema. It was reportedly bought on February 3.

Her bank account has been frozen, but Manivel had moved $10.1 million to a joint account and $430,000 to her daughter, Raveena Vijian. The house registration was also moved to Thilagavathy Gangadory, her sister, who’s based in Malaysia.

Crypto.com had taken the matter to Supreme Court, seeking to get the money back with 10% interest on it. And they successfully did it as the sisters who were both accused did not show up.

Gangadory was ordered to pay the $1.35 million with $27,369 interest in addition to the house being sold. The judgment was handed down, “It is established that the Craigieburn property was acquired with funds traceable to the wrongful payment and would never have been in Gangadory’s hands if the wrongful payment had not been made.”

“Thus, Gangadory was unjustly enriched by receiving the purchase price of the Craigieburn property out of the wrongful payment.”

But since she was never present when the judgment was handed down, the court’s decision was still “open to challenge if Gangadory ever seeks to set aside the default judgment.”
