NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy later reportedly said that they were well aware that he would take the stance. McCarthy told Fox News Digital, “We watched all elements of the show during multiple rehearsals this week and were aware that Eminem was going to do that.”

Back in 2016, the player explained himself, “I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color.”

“To me, this is bigger than football, and it would be selfish on my part to look the other way. There are bodies in the street and people getting paid leave and getting away with murder.”

His single act had become an icon that many athletes followed, such as Lewis Hamilton before the F1 race and the England team during Euro 2020.

Fellow stars and performers have taken to social media to call the halftime show “one of the best” ever.
