Elliot Page Talked About His Decision To Openly Come Out As A Trans
“I wanted to be a boy. I would ask my mom if I could be someday.”
Before the end of 2020, actor Elliot Page, who was previously known as Ellen Page, officially announced that he’s a trans with the pronouns he/they. Feeling liberated, Elliot wrote that he loves the fact that he reveals himself for being who he is.
On a post with more than 1.7 million likes, Elliot Page came out to the world and is no more known as Ellen Page.
He also recently talked in depth about his life and feelings on Time.
“I wanted to be a boy. I would ask my mom if I could be someday,” Elliot said in an interview with TIME. His first role as a daughter in ‘Pit Role’ meant that he couldn’t keep his short childhood hair long. As he became a professional actor at the age of 10, he had to adhere to the standards and expectations of the job he was passionate about.
“This feeling of true excitement and deep gratitude to have made it to this point in my life,” he shared when asked about how he feels now.
Before he shared the heartfelt letter on his social media, he was prepared for the worst. There will be a rain of praises and encouragement, along with bitter reactions full of hatred.
“What I was anticipating was a lot of support and love and a massive amount of hatred and transphobia. That’s essentially what happened,” he recalls. But Elliot did not imagine that his story would become a trend in more than 20 countries and increase his followers count by 400,000.
“Transgender people are so very real.”
Elliot recalls how ‘Juno,’ where the ‘Umbrella Academy’ star acted out the role of a pregnant teen, took his career off. The indie film was a huge milestone for the 21-year-old, but throughout all that he “never recognized myself.”
It’s got to the point where Elliot was “suffering from depression, anxiety and panic attacks” when he took on feminine roles in blockbuster movies like ‘Inception.’
The first liberation was when she came out and married choreographer Emma Portner in 2018.
But this was before his gender identity became clear to the public, and while it was refreshing, something was still stuck in her throat. She called her wish to come out as a trans selfish, explaining, “It’s for me. I want to live and be who I am.”
And now, she wishes to use the privilege that comes with her fame and status to help others. “My privilege has allowed me to have resources to get through and to be where I am today, and of course, I want to use that privilege and platform to help in the ways I can,” said the actor.
