David Foster Talks About Parenting At 73 And What He’s Learned From Late Parenting

“There are so many things that can go wrong.”

‘Asia Got Talent’ judge David Foster wasn’t a parent for a long time before he welcomed his youngest in 2021. At 73 years old, he’s currently back to fatherhood while raising his almost 2 years old boy with Katharine McPhee, his wife.

Foster’s oldest daughter is now 52 years old, but the task doesn’t get easier at his age.

“I had all daughters until my son and I love all my daughters immeasurably, but having a son is a little bit different,” shared the dad.

And it began with the challenge of people perceiving their age gap critically. Indeed, Katharine McPhee is 35 years younger than the producer.

“People always make the reference with Kat and me with the age difference, but I’ve always said there are so many things that can bring a marriage down, and age difference is just one of them.”

“There are so many things that can go wrong. We think we have it pretty together.”

After welcoming his son, Foster realized, “I won’t be around when he’s 50 or 40 even, or 30 maybe.”

But that comes with perks as someone who’s lived for a long time, “I think I can offer him wisdom from my 72 years on the planet. And maybe that’s not a bad trade-off. I hope so. I was not patient when I was young. I was arrogant and just on the move.”

But he’s learned to be active in life and still enjoy every moment and wants to be there as long as possible with his youngest. Foster said, “I still work, I’m still gone a lot, but maybe the time is a little more precious to me because I got more runway behind me than I have ahead of me now.”

He never imagined getting married at such age and even having another child, but he’s very happy as he said, “I haven’t regretted a single day of it.”
