Billie Eilish Reveals About Being Abused As A Minor

The more people talk about it, the better.

Billie Eilish sings a song that calls out abusers, particularly those who act disgustingly towards minors in ‘Your Power.’ Together with a radical change in her appearance for Vogue’s cover, Billie’s interview shed some light on how this song came to be and what it meant for her.

A woman, a 19-year-old, a celebrity, and a survivor. Billie Eilish talks about confidence, abuse, and why she chose corsets.

“It’s an open letter to people who take advantage – mostly men,” Billie talked about the song. She particularly wanted people to understand the song’s context, not just looking for who she might be referring to. “It’s really not at all about one person,” she emphasized.

“Try not to abuse your power,” the first verse of the song sings.

A song with a universal message that empowers victims and calls out abusers.

When she uploaded this song, Billie wrote, “I feel very vulnerable putting this one out because I hold it so close to my heart.”

Back to her interview, she shared her observation, “I don’t know one girl or woman who hasn’t had a weird experience, or a really bad experience. And men, too – young boys are taken advantage of constantly.”

“How dare you” also reminds people of Greta Thunberg’s UN 2019 speech.

Reaching the age of maturity gave Billie the perspective she didn’t have when she was younger. She admitted, “I used to not understand why age mattered… You feel like you’re so mature, and you know everything.”

Now, older and more ‘experienced,’ she’s able to say more on the topic, “You can always be taken advantage of. That’s a big problem in the world of domestic abuse or statutory rape – girls that were very confident and strong-willed finding themselves in situations where they’re like, ‘Oh my god, I’m the victim here?’”

“And it’s so embarrassing and humiliating and demoralizing to be in that position of thinking you know so much and then you realize, I’m being abused right now,” she continued.

Fame is a form of power and she pointed it out, “There’s all these people who are incredibly vulnerable and would honestly do anything you say. That’s a crazy feeling.”

Billie didn’t go in-depth about the abuse she experienced, but she explained that it wasn’t a figure in the music industry. In fact, she wouldn’t label it ‘exceptional’ to fight the systemic nature of abuse. Despite the possibility of people finding her music and fashion choice contradictory, she explained that it’s one’s freedom and interest in corsets that made her choose this.
