AT&T Outage Leaves Thousands Without Service

AT&T outage causes ‘SOS only’ message on iPhones, major cities affected.

Many AT&T customers woke up to a frustrating situation on Thursday. Thousands of users, around 30,000 initially, reported that their AT&T mobile service was down. This number grew to over 70,000 by 8 a.m. as more people experienced disruptions.

AT&T acknowledged the issue on their Community Forum page:

“We are aware of an outage currently impacting our Mobility users and are working to resolve it ASAP,” the comment wrote. “For the latest info please visit our Service Outage Information Page. We apologize for this inconvenience.”

For those unfamiliar with the “SOS only” message on an iPhone, it indicates that the device can only make emergency calls and is not connected to the regular cellular network. This can be quite alarming for users who rely on their phones for daily communication.

The outage was widespread, affecting major cities across the United States, including New York, Los Angeles, Atlanta, Tampa, Dallas, and Philadelphia. While other carriers like Verizon and T-Mobile also experienced outages, AT&T seemed to be the most affected.

As of the report, AT&T had not provided any further information on the cause of the outage or when service would be fully restored. Some users noted that while their calling capabilities were affected, they could still send text messages. However, there were concerns raised about the impact on emergency services, with the Highlands County Sheriff’s Office warning that the national issue might prevent residents from calling 911.
