Amber Heard’s Fans Condemned Jury As ‘Sexist’ After Johnny Depp Wins Case
“Punishing her for speaking about her experiences of abuse.”
The Fairfax court saw the closing of the defamation case between Johnny Depp and Amber Heard. Depp was ruled in favor as his ex-wife was ordered to pay $15 million in damages. On the other hand, Depp was ordered to pay her $2 million, on top of the $7 million divorce settlement he gave her years ago.
While fans of Depp and thousands saw this as one step ahead for male abuse victims, Heard’s fans are reeling.
The 36-year-old actress expressed her disappointment in the jury’s decision on social media and penned a statement. Even though she’s set to received $2 million from the court, her fans have been angered by the results.
One supporter wrote, “This jury is a racist, sexist fan-group and nothing more. I have no hope for women – ever.”
The jury that gave their final verdict consisted of people from various backgrounds, including black and Asian people. Some of them were white the same as Amber Heard.
“My heart goes out to Amber. F*** that sexist jury and f*** this sexist country!” wrote another in anger.
A gender columnist wrote against the ruling, condemning how it will “silence women, and it is meant to.”
Worth noting that before this, Depp lost a libel case to a UK news outlet that labeled him a “wife beater” before any court ruled him as the abuser in a relationship. Evidence surmounting in the UK court had not contained even half of the things the Fairfax court in Virginia saw for the past month.
Comedian Amy Schumer has also shared a Gloria Steinem quote on her page for support.
Depp’s lawyer commented after the verdict that it “confirms what we have said from the beginning.”
The defamatory case essentially denies that Depp was ever an abuser as Heard claimed in her op-ed. It subsequently implied that she may have been the abuser herself. The juries, which consisted of five men and two women, were overwhelmingly in favor of Depp.
Heard remained calm before expressing how upset she is on social media later. Depp wasn’t present as he was in England to perform with his band.
Heard blamed “the disproportionate power, influence, and sway of my ex-husband” for the verdict. She called it a “setback” and added that she was sad about losing “a right I thought I had as an American – to speak freely and openly.”
On the other hand, Depp thanked the jury and said it had “gave me my life back.”
