Celebrities Are Leaving Twitter After Elon Musk Bought The Platform

27th October was the day Elon Musk became the owner of Twitter. The CEO of companies Space X and Tesla spent $44billion on the site and had vowed to make it open to a wider range of speech. While most people criticized the plan as a move that will make the platform hostile, Musk has insisted his purchase is to help humanity & assured it wouldn’t become a free-for-all hellscape.

“The bird is freed,” Musk wrote following his ownership of Twitter. 

Less than 24 hours after his acquisition, the billionaire requested that logged-out users visiting Twitter.com be redirected to the Explore Page, which shows trending tweets and news stories, as per The Verge. Musk also announced that Twitter would be forming a content moderation council with widely diverse viewpoints. 

“No major content decisions or account reinstatements will happen before that council convenes,” Musk added.

Twitter’s ‘Super Follows’ subscription, which allows users to access additional paid content, was also changed to Subscriptions. Musk also revealed his plans to use his Space X resources to make Twitter available to areas where it’s not yet accessible. The changes are no doubt at a fast pace, but not all celebs are thrilled about the acquisition, with some quitting the platform.

Ken Olin, the ‘This Is Us Executive’ producer, left the platform, tweeting, ‘I’m out of here. No Judgement.’

Josh Gad is debating whether to leave, fearing that hate speech might worsen.

Alex Winter from Bill & Ted and screenwriter Shonda Rhimes have also both left the platform. 

Musk equally made some staff-related changes. BoredPanda reported that he fired Parag Agrawal, who was Twitter’s CEO from November 2021 until October 2022. He also fired the Head of Legal, Policy and Trust, Vijaya Gadde, who had supported the ban on political advertising and Donald Trump’s suspension.

The New CEO is now Matt Wallace. The cryptocurrency expert broke the news on Twitter, stating ‘he will work hard to protect free speech and integrate Dogecoin. 

With Musk owning Twitter, some people are also quite concerned about what it means for users who have been banned or suspended from the platform. In May, the Tesla founder revealed he would reinstate Trump’s account if he bought it. Trump, at the time, didn’t say he wouldn’t return even if his band reversed. 

However, director Rob Reiner encourages people to stay on Twitter to ‘preserve our constitutional democracy.’
