Maleficent Listens To No One But This Bird, Why?
What a beautiful dynamic between the two.
Disney’s ‘Maleficent: Mistress of Evil’ has premiered and stars all the familiar faces we have from the first installment of the live-action (except for the prince). It is loosely based on Sleeping Beauty’s classic tale with a twist.
This time, we want to talk about Maleficent’s most loyal subordinate, the henchman Diaval. While Angelina Jolie’s Maleficent does not listen to people and is constantly ready to be triggered, Diaval is a man whose words she actually listens and weighs.
During a press conference for the movie, Sam Riley reveals, “One of the things I really enjoyed about the first one was the bickering that we have between one another. I think I imagine that’s developed over the last six years. We’ve become the sort of surrogate parents of Aurora.”
Diaval appears to play a core role in being an adviser to Maleficent, “Diaval is sort of one of the only ones who are brave enough to contribute or suggest means of being more polite or how humans behave.”
Sam Riley also revealed that it’s not easy to become a raven in a snap of her finger. While it looks easy on-screen, Riley had to face through quite the embarrassment.
“The transformation is a bit silly. I was more used to it [in the sequel],” said Riley. “I remember the first day, I had to go from being crouched down to jumping up in the air. It’s kind of embarrassing in front of a massive crew of people,” he revealed.
“Fortunately, the special effects make it look fabulous.”
Yes, we all just love how Diaval just seems to be the only person loyal to her. And how they can bicker like friends, yet, Diaval shows the kind of loyalty that is only towards a queen.
