Creators Are Devastated Over OnlyFans’ Plan To Ban S[e]xually Explicit Content
The decision is in response to requests from its investors.
OnlyFans is getting out of the sexually explicit video business! Starting from October 1st, the company will stop creators from sharing material equipped with sexually explicit conduct on its website. They will still be permitted to put up nudity, but it must be consistent with OnlyFans’ Acceptable Use Policy.
OnlyFans’ Creators are left devastated after the company announced it would ban all ‘sexually explicit’ content.
Under its current terms of service, nudity is allowed as long as it isn’t broadcast from a country where public nudity is illegal. It will be recalled that OnlyFans had exploded amid the pandemic as sex workers, including online influencers, used it to charge fans for exclusive access to photos, videos, and other material.
Since then till date, the platform has garnered over 130million users. “OnlyFans will prohibit the posting of any content containing sexually explicit conduct. In order to ensure the long-term sustainability of the platform and to continue to hots an inclusive community of creators and fans, we must evolve our content guidelines.” An OnlyFans Spokesperson told LADbible.
The website claims it is ‘evolving its content guidelines’ after facing pressure from its financial backers.
However, it seems not everyone has digested the mentioned above. Creators (s*x workers and adult film stars) who turned to the social media service platform to earn money on their terms are now devastated. “I’m absolutely devastated by the news concerning OnlyFans. Anyone following me lately knows that I just narrowly dodged eviction thanks to that platform and my fans there. I have no idea what I’m going to do now.” One creator said on Twitter.
Another, identified as Shea, added: “I have to start over completely. 6 MONTHS of hard work, gone. I’m losing my mind right now. A third added: “I am honestly pretty devastated with the news of OnlyFans removing adult content while I will be moving platforms. I urge you all to see this as yet another example of businesses using and mistreating sex workers. Sex work is work, period; stop treating it like it’s not.”
So far, the decision has prompted backlash online – with some creators threatening to boycott the site altogether.
In 2020 alone, the site had generated a whopping $2billion, with the company receiving a 20% cut from content shared on the platform. In a press statement released to Variety, OnlyFans admitted that their new vision comes following a need to comply with the requests of their banking partners and payout providers. TechCrunch reported that the site is under a lot of pressure to ensure they aren’t hosting child sex abuse material or malicious content like revenge porn.
Due to the pressure, banks, credit card companies such as MasterCard, who allow for payment on the site, and OnlyFans’ investors are likely to be behind the upcoming change. Nonetheless, the company has been applauded for giving sex workers a safer place to do their jobs, but sex work still has a stigma. On the other hand, OnlyFans has said it will provide more guidance on its new policy later.
