School Replaces Historical Figures As ‘House Names’ With Awakening Icons Like Greta Thunberg

Not only brave but applaudable!

Awakening heroes are gradually gaining recognition! Greta Thunberg, Amanda Gorman, and Marcus Rashford have countlessly been featured in magazines and the news. However, these heroes and more take over house names that honored historical figures like Sir Walter Raleigh in schools.

A Junior school in East Yorkshire replaces its house names with awakening icons like Environment activist Greta Thunberg.

This change precisely transpired after Francesca, an ex-pupil of Howden Junior School in East Yorkshire, complained about historical figures as house names instead of emerging heroes like Malala Yousafzai.

Giving the complaint a deep thought, the school’s headteacher Lee Hill gave in and has ditched Admiral Nelson’s names, among others, after the school’s student voted on replacements.

The replacements include environmental activist Greta, poverty campaigner Marcus, Human rights activist Malala, and American poet Amanda, who recently read a piece at Joe Biden’s presidential inauguration.

‘I am excited and proud to share this. Not because of the individuals our school council chose as presenting our school community values or the great art form local artist Amy Smith but because of the courage of one child who made a stand.’ Headteacher Lee said on Twitter.

He continued: ‘During the Black Lives Matter protests. I received a passionate and brave email from a former pupil. This pupil not only educated me about the history of the three houses names that sat on our website, in our hall and were raised as ambassadors for our school but explained the impact of seeing these figures who have links to slavery, racism, oppression had on her during her time at our school. Not only a brave email to send to a white male in a position of power but an email that set off a chain of events.’

The pupil sent the email at the Black Lives Matter movement’s peak when George Floyd’s death in the US sparked a global outburst. Floyd passed away on May 25 after a white police officer identified as Derek Chauvin pressed his knee into his neck for eight minutes and 46 seconds despite pleas that he couldn’t breathe. Nonetheless, a school in Bristol had in Oct. 2020 changed its name from Colston’s girls’ school to Montpelier High school to forge its own identity. Initially, it’s been named after a slave trader Edward Colston.
