23 Celebrity Women Who Boldly Normalized Body Hair
The display of self-love and acceptance.
We are now in 2021 – everyone does have body hair and continually will. Natural body hair is nothing to be embarrassed about, and thankfully, more women appear to be embracing it. While this action might’ve sparked a sense of panic for razor industries, this action gives women reason to celebrate every strand of their body hair. In the past few months, celebs like pop icon Madonna, Ashley Graham, Amandla Stenberg, and many others are promoting body positivity.
As a result, the rejection of societal beauty norms and self-love preaching have emerged. Shaving or not shaving body hair is a personal decision, just like wearing lipstick or getting botox. But now, famous women walking onto a red carpet with unshaved armpits have gained acceptance, and more people have stopped freaking out at it.
While a few people are still too quick to write rude comments despite not asking for their opinion, plenty of people continue to have positive opinions on this subject matter. Here we’ve compiled a few celebrity women with body hair for inspiration. Have a look!
Former Destiny Child Member Kelly Rowland
The actor, singer, and entrepreneur have become an activist for empowering girls to love and accept their hair from their head. Rowland’s first photo of promoting body hair surfaced during the 2008 InStyle Best Beauty Buys Awards. For the event, the singer who donned a sequined halter dress flaunted her unshaven underarms.
Lady Gaga
Lady Gaga has, over the years, made a career out of undermining the expectations of how a pop star is supposed to appear. Gaga has always chosen to stand out rather than blend in. This makes more sense that the singer would ditch the razor and allow her body hair to grow. In an Instagram post captioned “Like a summer peach,” a bit of fuzz is quite visible on the Bad Romance singer’s armpit.
Drew Barrymore
Barrymore rose to fame with roles in several romantic comedies and as one of Charlie’s Angels in the ’90s. She’s been keeping it real with her desire to keep her body hair growing. Barrymore’s first flaunt of body hair occurred in 2015 when she posed with designer Marc Jacobs at Olympus Fashion Week, wearing a slinky black dress.
Model Leila Davis
Through most of her photos, Leila promotes body hair. In her latest photoshoot, where she rocked Stella McCartney Ensemble in New Adidas Campaign, her natural armpit hair was on full display. Leila believes that it’s so misogynistic to attack women for having body hair, especially as people wouldn’t do it to men.
Amanda Stenberg
The internet experienced a meltdown when Stenberg skipped using the razor before the European Premiere of “The Hate You Give.” Rather than shaving, she led critics on with a hashtag that reads: #drama #armpit. Stenberg remains an activist for race, gender, and sexuality issues.
Gigi Hadid
Ever popular models have hair. Just like Leila, Gigi also confidently flaunts her impressive body hair under her armpits. During a 2017 video shoot with Love Magazine, Gigi widely spread her hands up, donning a red ensemble and wet hair. Some fans took issues with this, while a few applauded it.
Adele
The singer grew a beard during pregnancy with her son and named the beard LARRY. According to Yahoo, the singer explained: “When I got pregnant, I had so much testosterone in me that I grew a beard. I only cropped it last night. It’s true. I’m not telling a joke. I have a beard, but I am proud of it. I call it Larry.”
Scout Willis
Scout is one among Demi Moore and Bruce Willis’s daughters. She regularly shares photos of her rocking armpit hair. In this photo on Instagram, she captioned it: “Feeling grateful to live in California again and get to dress like this in February. Bless. Good to be home.” Scout has equally spoken against banning nipples on the platform.
Madonna
When it comes to freeing body hair, Madonna has long been a rebel in embracing every inch. “Long hair…… I don’t Care!!!!!! #artforfreedom #rebelheart #revolutionoflove.” Madonna had caption this epic photo back in 2014.
Paris Jackson
In a photo shared on Instagram, alongside a view of her bare legs, Paris had written: If you’re not competing with your brother over who can grow longer leg hair wyed (what you even doing).”
Julia Roberts
The Notting Hill actress first flaunted her unshaven armpits during a film’s premiere in 1999. Roberts had enthusiastically waved at her fans in a short-sleeved, sequined, crimson shift dress. This moment will forever be cemented in pop culture history despite Roberts having no agenda while doing so.
Miley Cyrus
Miley loves her armpit hair so dearly that she had at one time dyed it to pink. But aside from this, the singer has been embracing her natural hair in bikini photos, among others. She’s down to earth with natural hair sticking out.
Rihanna
Rihanna proved what a diva she is when she shared a selfie that featured hair on her legs. She didn’t address the hair, and that move made people love and support her even more.
Julia Michaels
During 2021’s Grammy Awards, Singer Julia rocked her armpit hair. However, as she had previously tweeted about not shaving her armpit months prior, it wasn’t a shock. “I don’t know why I ever did before. Social norms can eat eggplant.”
Ashley Graham
The model is an advocate for body positivity. During an interview with Glamour in 2017, Ashley admitted she doesn’t trim her, erm, lady garden, revealing: “Honey, I have a full bush. Period. It’s about your preference and your partner’s preference.”
Emma Corrin
Corrin, the actress best known for playing Princess Diana in Netflix’s The Crown, fearlessly displayed her armpit hair on the cover of Glamour UK. She claimed she began growing it out after becoming single. Besides, the actress realized that she didn’t want to shave and pondered why she ever bothered.
Mayim Bialik
As written on her website, the Big Bang Theory star revealed she’s never shaved her armpits or legs. “Seemed like a waste of time, a conformity that disgusted me (I was a feisty feminist even at 14).” She wrote.
Lourdes Leon
Like her mom (Madonna), Lourdes, nicknamed Lola, doesn’t care much about standard beauty norms. In a recent Instagram selfie, the 24-Year-Old donned a pale green mini dress proudly and showed off her armpit above her red designer purse.
Cara Delevingne
Model Cara had laser hair removal done on her armpit. It wasn’t the end of her hair journey as she was even more proud when she flaunts the armpit wigs during her new movie titled: “Her Smell.”
Emily Ratajkowski
While posing for a Harper’s Bazaar Cover, Emily rocked her body hair and even defended the act of not shaving with the publication. “For me, body hair is another opportunity for women to exercise their ability to choose — a choice based on how they want to feel and their associations with having or not having body hair,” Emily said.
Bekah Martinez
The Bachelor star shared that she stopped shaving her legs and armpits as a practice of self-love and acceptance. “It has taken months to get used to it. The horrible online comments don’t help. But I’m getting there.” Bekah had written.
Halsey
Halsey has always been keeping things real. In the Rolling Stone Magazine of 2019, the singer embraced her natural body hair, and she rocked hardly any makeup, just natural curls, and armpits.
Bella Throne
Bella has been very open about her love for her body hair. She got vocal about women’s war on body hair and why she had refused to pick up the razor. “If you want my legs and armpits shaved so badly, you can do it yourself. I see myself and other girls get hate for having body hair. God forbid I’m not all waxed and oiled up AT ALL TIMES.” Throne, according to InStyle said.
