One of the best relaxing activities you should resort to when you’re stressed out is cleaning. I know, I know. House cleaning has been the source of stress for many people because looking at the kids won’t stop taking out their toys! But the feeling of watching things line up neatly after the place looked like a complete mess is very satisfying, don’t you think?
These people show just how nice it is when you really get up and get things done. It can be anywhere from 30 minutes of decluttering to 3 hours of scrubbing, but the results are just too neat and smooth to not share!
“BFK convert, this stuff is amazing!”
“Before and After.”
“Finally got around to cleaning my depression/post op mess. Feeling fresh!”
The reason that you’re not cleaning your home is not necessarily because you’re lazy. Anxiety and depressions can be the reasons why. Maggie Vaughan, a psychotherapist from New York, explained, “People are feeling increasingly overwhelmed and powerless in the face of COVID-19. The uncertainty about where the situation’s headed is intolerable for us.”
“Barkeeper’s Friend for the rest of my Revere Ware. Not perfect but still a huge difference.”
“I did it. After months of severe depression, I did it.”
“This cupboard has been bothering me for a year and I finally had both the time and motivation to tackle it.”
“BKF and elbow grease.”
“I got out of my funk and began with cleaning my kitchen… Finally.”
“I cleaned my way out of my depression nest so I could start the new year on a better (and cleaner) note. Here’s to 2021!”
But cleaning can also be your cure. In fact, there’s a scientific reason why cleaning can be healing for the soul. Jaime Zuckerman, who has a clinical license in psychology, said, “When we seek out ways to reduce feelings of helplessness, cleaning is one of the ways we might decide to do that.”
When we clean, things fall into place. They are within reach and to our knowledge. Spaces become decluttered. The act of repeating the same action calms the mind, such as sweeping and scrubbing.
“My SO and I spent the weekend power washing.”
“Garden house redoing.”
“Spring cleaning – Power washing edition. Mildew – it’s a Florida thing.”
“I can’t believe I was able to push myself to do this. I am so relieved.”
“Before and after organizing refrigeration control wires.”
“Someone on Reddit recommended Iron Out for hard water stained dishwasher in our new rental, one cycle and the results are amazing.”
“This might be the best before and after photo I’ve ever taken. Cleaning the garage.”
Keeping things neat and in line can also be our subconscious trying to anticipate things. Human nature demands so that they can minimize unexpected situations as much as possible. Evolutionary anthropologist Martin Lang explains that humans have that impulse which ‘pushes us to take precautions and try to control our environment so there is nothing surprising that could potentially harm us.’
“Citrus cleaner, cloths, scrubber, water vacuum, and hot water will get the job done.”
“I couldn’t handle how gross my sister’s tea kettle was from stove spatters. Some Bar Keeper’s Friend and a little elbow grease did the job!”
