You Won’t Be Able To Find Studio Ghibli’s Movies On Netflix… And Anywhere Else

Hands-on copies of the movies are almost non-existent!

Well, that’s the news and unfortunately for those of you who have been diligently waiting on Netflix and everywhere else, you won’t ever see the movies there.

Hayao Miyazaki’s legendary masterpieces such as ‘My Neighbor Totoro’, ‘Princess Mononoke’ and ‘Spirited Away’ will never be available on Netflix, Hulu, or even for renting on Amazon Prime and Apple Movies. The easiest way to gain access to the movie would be through the currently running Ghibli screening fest.

This rings with what Miyazaki himself used to say during the candid documentary, ‘The Kingdom of Dreams and Madness’.

“I’m a man of the 20th century. I don’t want to deal with the 21st.”

This proved by one of the most intense fights over ‘Princess Mononoke’ edits against Harvey Weinstein. The first dubbed of ‘Spirited Away’ in 2003 won Miyazaki Oscar for Best Animated Film. Disney later gained the rights to redub his most successful works such as ‘Howl’s Moving Castle’, ‘Ponyo’, ‘The Secret World of Arrietty’, ‘From Up on Poppy Hill’, ‘The Tale of Princess Kaguya’, and ‘The Wind Rises’.

Steven Spielberg himself oversees the makings alongside ‘Indiana Jones’ producer Frank Marshall.

A man of his own words and aesthetics, Miyazaki also said, “The notion that one’s goal in life is to be happy, that your own happiness is the goal… I just don’t buy it.” He is retiring, but his works have left footprints all over the world, particularly in Japan.

A Studio Ghibli theme park is currently under construction and short films that are no more released can only be found playing in the museum. And these may be our only ways to enjoy his art as for now.
