Elias Chasiotis, a photography enthusiast on spending the last days of 2019 in Qatar stumbled on a nature scene that was definitely worth the trip.

Experiencing a solar eclipse with the Sun rising above the horizon and appearing like a devil’s horn coming out of the water, Chasiotis captured the entire moment.

‘Since when I was a little kid, the astronomy world has always captivated me. I have been an amateur astrophotographer for the past 15years. I took these pics in the coastal city of Al Wakrah, Qatar in the early hours of December 26.’ Chasiotis said.

The photos aren’t as a result of luck and pure chance, but as a result of Chasiotis intentionally choosing a perfect view and location to capture the eclipsed sun emerging from the sea.

He further told Bored Panda: ‘I had hoped the optical effects like an inferior mirage would be visible and I was very lucky to capture them. The weather condition didn’t appear good at first as there were a lot of haze and low clouds.’

‘I was disturbed that nothing would come out of the eclipse. But when the sun finally started to rise, it appeared like two separate pieces in red horns piercing the sea. Later on, it took the form of a crescent with the termed ‘Etruscan Vase’ inferior mirage effect visible. As a result of its shape, the scene was dubbed the ‘Evil Surprise’

Using the Sony A7 II Mirrorless Camera and the Sigma 150-600mm F/5-6.3 DG OS HSM lens in capturing the breathtaking photos, Chastiosis continued: ‘I chose the high ISO, low shutter speed and continuous shooting as I planned to catch the airplanes and the seagulls.’
