Spectator With A Sign Causes A Huge Pile-Up At The Tour De France
Many riders got stalled and laid injured on the road.
The Tour de France kicked off over the weekend to start its three weeks of racing, but eventually, the race’s first week met unexpected chaos. In particular, a roadside spectator stepped into the road with a banner to the TV cameras, causing a shocking pile up. The banner read: “Allez Opi Omi,” which implies greeting to grandparents.

The Peloton rode their way through the narrow Brittany back roads while the Jumbo Visma team stayed together on the right-hand side of the road. With almost all the riders in the 184 strong field, Tony Martins got instantly distracted when the spectator stepped into the road and looked straight into the cameras.

Martin couldn’t escape the situation as his distance from his spectator was short. He slammed into the fan’s arm, fell hard onto the asphalt, and of course, his German teammates and competitors all piled in behind. Over twenty riders hit the deck, and it turned out, Team DSM’s Jasha Sutterlin was forced to abandon the race due to the injuries.
This crash is considered one of the most shocking in the race’s recent memory.
Julian Alaphilippe, who also came down in the crash, eventually bounced back and took the victory.

This crash is the most unexpected in the race’s recent memory. Since the incident, the cycling community has, on the other hand, reacted angrily, with Michael Hutchinson, wring on Twitter, “It’s a long time since I’ve seen anything so stupid as that spectator.” @MagnusOpus33 also added: “This idiotic spectator caused the whole peloton to crash in the Tour de France. Horrendous, catastrophic. Ban that person forever.”
