‘Maleficent’ Sequel Opening Weekend Fell Short Of Expectations
A week opening, will it
Disney has several hyped up sequels this late year with ‘Frozen 2’ taking major attention. But before ‘Frozen 2’, there is ‘Maleficent: Mistress of Evil’ currently playing in theaters all over the world. To the surprise of many, the twisted take on classic Grim’s tale of Sleeping Beauty has been making less than expected.
Initial projection says that Angelina Jolie’s reprising role as Maleficent in the sequel will reach $45 million. Throughout Friday to Sunday, the opening weekend only generated $36 million, 25% away from the initial projection. International earning has reached $117 million, but the movie is still at a loss.

It took $180 million to produce the sequel and another $100 million to market the movie worldwide.
The initial movie that was released back in 2014 brought in almost $70 million during their first weekend. But since then, Angelina Jolie has not been as active, leading questions into whether her name still holds as much power as it used to. The sequel is also starring Elle Fanning, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Chiwetel Ejiofor.

‘Maleficent: Mistress of Evil’ has also received a rotten rating, but unlike the first flick which has an equal rotten rate and only a 70% audience score, the sequel is currently at a 96% audience score.
There may still be hope.
