Luxembourg Becomes The First Country That Makes Public Transportation Free

Time to hit that train.

Luxembourg took one great step towards reducing the poverty gap as well as traffic congestion. They have declared all public transportation from the train, bus to trams free for use. Grand Duchy makes Luxembourg the first country to do so and it’s effective per February 29, 2020, instead of March 1 as previously stated.

Minister of mobility and public works, François Bausch, describes the big step as “the social icing on the cake of the global strategy for a multimodal revolution.”

A Luxembourg spokesperson also explained why the change of date, “As 2020 is a leap year and as the concerts and celebrations are happening tomorrow, it has been decided to make public transport free as from tomorrow, in order to allow everybody to join the public events free of charge.”

The change is expected to help reduce traffic congestion and encourage more people to take public transportation. The commuter’s tax break will be removed and the government hopes this will change the behavior of citizens in time.
