Jada Pinkett Smith ‘Never’ Wanted To Marry Will Smith, Cried The Whole Time At Wedding
“We only got married because [Jada’s mom] was crying.”
Jada Pinkett Smith admitted that she “didn’t want” to tie the knots with her husband of 25 years. The conversation was brought up in a resurfaced video from 2018, from a show hosted by the Smiths family called ‘Red Table Talk’.
She recalled, “I was under so much pressure, you know, being a young actress, being young, and I was just, like, pregnant, and I just didn’t know what to do.”
The 50-year-old, who was then pregnant with Jaden, now 23, was “pressured” to marry the “Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” by her mother, Adrienne Banfield-Norris. She stated clearly in the video, “I never wanted to be married.”
Will nodded to this fact as Gammy – Jada’s mom – was also present at the table. Jada said again, “I really didn’t wanna get married.”
Smith grinned at the statement and told Willow their 21-year-old daughter seated next to him, “We only got married because Gammy was crying.”
Jada continued, “It was almost as if Gammy was like, ‘You have to get married, so let’s talk about the wedding.'”
Gammy chimed in, “I remember feeling very strongly and wanting you guys to be married.”
But she added, “I do remember [wanting you and Will to get married], but I don’t remember your rejection of the idea of marriage. I remember the rejection of the idea of a wedding but not of a marriage.”
Jada said, “And now Gammy done gone to Will, crying about ‘I don’t want a wedding,’ and now I’m being forced to have a wedding. I just wanted it to be the two of us on a mountain because I was like: ‘This is serious business.”
Gammy then recalled their wedding held at her hometown in Baltimore, Maryland, “The wedding was horrible.”
“It was a mess. Jada was sick, she was very unpleasant … She didn’t cooperate with anything.”
The mom-of-two laughed and agreed with her mom, “And I was so upset that I had to have a wedding. I was so pissed I went crying down the freaking aisle. I cried the whole way down the aisle.”
While on the opposite spectrum, Will stated, “There wasn’t a day in my life that I wanted anything other than being married and having a family. From literally 5 years old, I was picturing what my family would be.”
“I was devastated worse than a divorce,” Will recalled the moment.
But at the end of the day, they agreed that the marriage was “the right call”.
