Homes are more than just wood and steel. Homes represent a location of belonging, a place to rest and to make memories. Naturally, we (humans) tend to spend more time thinking about our homes and how it can reflect our values. We all want homes that permits the reduction of environmental footprint and space where we would love to spend more time than ever.

But then can sustainable homes become conventional? Of course, eco-friendly homes can become typical, and bringing this to the limelight, IKEA has built tiny homes that are incredibly stylish. For several years, IKEA is known for organizing and decorating homes worldwide with its ready-to-assemble furniture.

Fast forward to 2020; the loved Swedish company has taken its commitment to a whole next level, launching its very first tiny eco-friendly homes. Tiny home movement hinged on dwellings smaller than 500 square feet has been emerging in popularity as travelers seek safe, remote, and compact locations amid the pandemic.

Specifically, the Swedish retailer collaborated with Curbed creative launched the shopping experience online where customers can explore the home and purchase furniture or gadgets to decorate their own compact living space. Escape developed the trailer, a customized version of its Vista Boho XL model – designed with on-demand heated water, composting toilets, and interestingly solar panels.

IKEA Tiny Homes at 187 Square feet are undoubtedly the perfect fit for anyone who’s always on the move or wanting to mix and match remote activities with exploration. Founder and CEO of Escape, Dan George Dobrowolski, claim sustainability is the core of all their designs as it shows up in different ways.

‘Energy efficiency with a tiny carbon footprint, use of sustainable and recycled materials, the building’s ability to be moved and adapt to new environments are needed. The list is endless.’ Dobrowolski said in an Interview with BoredPanda.

According to IKEA Senior Interior Design Leader Abbey Stark – the custom build took 60days to complete. She had to source reusable, renewable, and recycled materials to make the space beautiful and functional. Stark did succeed with her mission.

As seen in the photos, the kitchen cupboards are designed with recycled bottle tops, while the whitewashed panels of the tiny home are made from sustainably grown pine. The whole house is also designed with neutral tones, including a collapsible desk and built-in storage.
