The dude with the sign has only one job every day: to protest. The man is one who’s changing the internet flow of humor, one sign at a time. Okay, jokes aside, we’re seriously in love with the humor and wits this man has and his determination to make one sign a day.
It is New Yorker Seth Phillips who never stops writing silly things to protest about. He teamed up with Jerry Media founder Elliot Tebele and they both brainstorm the most annoying stuff any healthy, working adult can relate in life. Do you remember that one guy with the “Stop replying-all to company-wide emails” sign? That’s him.
Now with over 7 million followers, Seth continues to voice out the voice of the majority that major corporations and people often don’t listen to. Like who in YouTube’s planning department thought it’d be cool to put two consecutive ads with one being completely unskippable?
The reason Dude With Sign is so popular with people is because of how relatable the signs are. The silent protest it brings to the busy streets of New York actually brings a smile to viewers and passersby. Contrary to serious movements, Phillips’ signs are funny and lighthearted.
Being real is probably the most perfect way to illustrate their creative process. Your common Twitter debate gets brought up as signs on the streets and people are just having so much fun knowing there’s someone out there raising awareness about ‘Seinfeld is way better than Friends.’
But seriously, Phillips does get his ideas from co-workers and just by listening to people. The man shared, “So we work in a pretty funny and creative space so once the account kicked off, more ideas came in from the team. When creating the protests, we try to come up with something funny that is relatable that people don’t particularly talk about.”
Their popularity skyrocketed within months of their popular sign. The creator told Forbes, “The corner usually fills up with people within minutes, and everyone has their phones out. When I’m finished, a lot of people will ask to take pictures with me or videos, which is still something to get used to.”
