In a startling incident, hundreds of people flocked to a small village of Luhihi in the Democratic Republic of Congo to illegally mine after a mountain made up of gold deposits was discovered. In a now-viral clip shared initially to Twitter, people were seen digging up and keeping the soil so they could wash and later extract the gold. ‘A video from the Republic of the Congo documents the biggest surprise for some villagers in this country, as an entire mountain filled with gold was discovered.’ User @Algohbary wrote on Twitter

The mountain is made up of 60-90% of gold, which triggered several miners from different countries to gather near the mountain to dig up.

The user added: ‘They dig the soil inside the gold deposits and take them to their homes to wash the dirt and extract the gold.’ In an updated clip, locals can be seen washing the dirt off the precious metal while collecting them in mental containers.

So far, the influx of diggers has been massive, putting pressure on the small village. According to Venant Burume Muhigirwa, South Kivu Mines Minister, authorities were forced to ban mining in the village. In an issued decree, the provincial government asked people to stop mining near the mountain to safeguard traceability, which is required under the law.

Nonetheless, Congo is filled with natural resources. People often exploit the lack of law and order situation to extract rich minerals for their benefits without paying required taxes or permission. This illegal act on mines also often result in gold being underreported in Congo.
