Female Colleague Slammed Male Teacher For Keeping Tampons And Pads For His Students
“What’s wrong with a period?”
Tampons and periods are still taboo to talk about in many places despite the progressive world we’re living in. Teenagers obviously don’t always find it easy to bring up the topic, especially when they need to get some essentials during emergency times.
A teacher who’s also a father of two daughters understood the dilemma and decided to prepare some essential needs in class. He has a basket of tampons and pads tucked in a cubical for female students to use when in need.
But a female colleague of his had, instead, found this problematic.
“AITA for keeping tampons/pads in a basket for my students?”
The 38-year-old teacher praised his students for being mature enough never to feel weirded out by the provisions. As the post gained traction and attention, he was asked by many people on his Venmo account, but the teacher thanked everyone’s kind intention and explained that he would continue doing this out of his pocket as he could afford them.
He also explained that his students have not made complaints or commented about the box. They have been very comfortable, and he made sure to refill them regularly. He also has snacks where the boys visit more often for.
Period shaming is rooted in many cultures that believe a woman must feel ashamed about her blood. This leads to many dangerous misconceptions that women associate periods with – “dirt, and disgust, and shame, and some might say fear.”
Women’s Health Psychology professor Jane Ussher from Western Sydney University spoke to ABC News, “If you talk to young women across a whole range of different cultural groups about their major concern about menstruation, it’s concealment. It’s about not knowing you’re menstruating—the worst idea being blood been seen, which leads to menstrual shame.”
