Cavers Rescue Poodle Trapped In A Cave 500ft Underground For Two Months
She’s lucky not to have drowned in the vertical and tight cave passage.
On June 9, mixed-breed poodle Abby went missing in the United States. Its owner Jeff Bohnert of Perryville, Missouri, searched literally everywhere for his pet, but it was to no avail. Two months after, the poodle has now been rescued after a group of cavers stumbled upon her while exploring.
Abby was trapped 500ft below ground for two months in the bowels of the Tom Moore Caves South of St. Louis.
Experienced cavers Garry Keene and Rick Haley took a group to the abovementioned location when they found the unexpected dweller. She was seen skinny, covered in dirt, and curled up on the mud floor. According to Haley, the poodle was so frail it couldn’t wag her tail or even whimper.
Harley added: “Dog can usually only survive a few days without food and water but luckily, there’s ample water in the cave.”
“As for food, I can think of nothing. It was evident by inspection of her she hadn’t eaten in a very long time. It was heartbreaking to see this and think about how she endured.” After giving Abby urgent help and a cozy duffle bag to rest in, it’s alleged Keene and fires Chief Rob Cahoon knocked on doors in the neighborhood to track down the owner.
And thankfully, neighbors the poodle and instantly directed the rescuers to Bohnert.
Haley admitted Abby is lucky not to have drowned in the vertical and very tight cave passage, which often fills up with water. She quoted owner Jeff saying the pet is recovering slowly and returning to herself. As per Haley, NPR reported Abby tried to be comfortable even though it was hard down there because it was very wet and 58 degrees (14C).
