Trans Swimmer Lia Thomas Wins NCAA Title For The 500-Yard Category
From #462 in the men’s category, she’s currently #1 in women’s.
Lia Thomas becomes the first transgender to win the NCAA title for the 500-yard category, only 1.75 seconds faster than Emma Weyant, the Virginian freshman. She walked up the podium for the gold medal with the time of 4:33.24.
Following hot on her tracks is Emma Weyant, who won her silver medal as a freshman.
Lia Thomas, previously known as William Thomas, swam for Penn’s men’s team for three years. She dropped out of the competition for a year to transition and returned to compete in the women’s category. She also won the women’s 500-yard freestyle at the Ivy League Championships with Catherine Buroker seven seconds behind her.
As she snags one gold medal after another, the swimmer is under heavy scrutiny by the masses who consider her physical constitution to be unfair against her competitors.
But the winner was calm and kept her focus on the medal.
The player spoke after winning it, “I try to ignore it as much as I can. I try to focus on my swimming — what I need to do to get ready for my races. I just try to block out everything else.”
