‘The Little Mermaid’ Makes A Huge Splash At The Box Office

The opening weekend of “The Little Mermaid” looks positive despite the controversies. The live adaptation reportedly made $48.3 million on Friday night alone, according to IMDB’s Box Office Mojo. Deadline is projecting at least $100 million in gross profit on opening weekend alone.

But it has received its fair share of criticisms as it was adapted from the original 1989 Disney animation. The Little Mermaid originally portrayed Ariel with Danish characteristics, which brought the cast of Halle Bailey controversial. The Post also criticized the Lin-Manuel Miranda-produced movie for being “lifeless.”

It’s coming in first, followed by the franchise movie “Fast X” at $6.3 million on its second weekend. And “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3″ is in third place at $5.4 million. It’s expected to drop further as Disney+ announced the movie is soon to hit the streaming platform like most of their flicks.

Some have commented that at some point in the movies, the scenes got too dark and might even be too scary for young children. Others didn’t like how parts of the stories and details deviated from the original story, such as Prince Eric’s parents’ status, and the names of Ariel’s sisters.

But praises aren’t rare either with many complimenting Halle Bailey for her impeccable performance. There are also parents chiming in that their kids are enjoying their best childhood memories in the year 2023. What do you think?
