Queen Elizabeth II Dies At 96
Queen Elizabeth’s reign spanned 15 British Prime Ministers, from Sir Winston Churchill to Liz Truss, and 14 US Presidents.
Queen Elizabeth II died today at age 96. Buckingham Palace claimed she died peacefully at Balmoral, surrounded by her family and children, including the former Prince of Wales, Charles. The Queen’s passing will see Britain and her commonwealth realms enter into ten days of mourning as millions of her subjects in the UK and abroad come to terms with her passing. It will also see her son, Charles become the new King.
And as her son accedes to the throne, there will be a celebration of her historic 70-Year reign that saw her reach her Platinum Jubilee. “The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon. The King and The Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and return to London tomorrow,” a statement from the Buckingham Palace spokesman read.
Charles, the King, has also shared: “The death of my beloved mother, Her Majesty The Queen, is a moment of the greatest sadness for me and all members of my family.”
“We mourn profoundly the passing of a cherished sovereign and a much-loved mother. I know her loss will be deeply felt throughout the country, the Realms, and the commonwealth and by countless people around the world. During this period of mourning and change, my family and I will be comforted and sustained by our knowledge of the respect and deep affection in which the Queen was so widely held.”
Other tributes are pouring in for her Majesty and to billions worldwide; she was the very face of Britishness.
To her subjects, as per DailyMail, the queen was the nation’s anchor, holding firm no matter what storm she or her country faced, from the uncertain aftermath of the Second World War to, more recently, the pandemic. Queen Elizabeth was also steadfast as she dealt with tragedies and scandals in her own family, most recently the fallout from Megxit and the passing away of her husband, Prince Philip.
Since Philip died at age 99 in April 2022, Queen Elizabeth had her health faltered and was forced to miss an increasing number of events mainly due to mobility issues.
In July, she reportedly traveled to Scotland for her annual summer break but canceled the traditional welcome to Balmoral Castle due to her health. The end of July saw Prince Charles represent his mother and open the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham with the Duchess of Cornwall. The Queen also missed the Braemar Gathering in late August, the first time she wasn’t at the Highland Games in her 70-Year-reign.
She was a little fit to meet with Boris Johnson at Balmoral to accept his resignation and Liz Truss, the new UK Prime Minister.
Her Majesty had on Tuesday stood with the support of a stick and smiled as she greeted Ms. Truss in front of a roaring fire. Before her death, the past two years had been hugely challenging and upsetting for the monarch as she had been forced to cut adrift Prince Andrew, her favorite son, after he fought, then settled a civil case with Virginia Roberts Giuffree for up to £12 million.
Another challenge for the Queen was the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s decision to quit as frontline royals.
She met their daughter Lilibet, named after her with the nickname George VI and her husband, the Duke of Edinburgh. However, the new King Charles will embark on a tour of the United Kingdom before his mother’s funeral with his wife Camilla, who the Queen announced would be crowned her eldest son’s Queen Consort in a historic statement to mark Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee and 70 years on the throne.
